Island Health Shares Essential Health Tips for Back-to-School Season

As the new school year approaches, Island Health has released important health guidelines aimed at helping families maintain both physical and mental well-being. With children returning to classrooms across British Columbia, the health authority emphasizes practical steps that can prevent the spread of illness during this critical time of the year.
Key Health Practices for Families
Island Health advises parents to encourage their children to practice proper hygiene. This includes techniques such as coughing or sneezing into their elbows, avoiding touching their faces with unwashed hands, and refraining from sharing food or drinks with peers. “Handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness in schools,” the health authority stated in a recent press release.
In addition to physical health, mental well-being plays a crucial role in a successful school year. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to maintain open lines of communication with children, create a calm home environment, and engage in outdoor physical activities. Establishing consistent routines for bedtime, meals, and homework is also recommended to support children’s overall health.
Vaccination and Disease Prevention
In light of recent reports concerning the spread of measles in the region, Island Health is urging parents to ensure their children’s vaccinations are current. According to data from Island Health, one in ten individuals infected with measles may require hospitalization, underscoring the importance of immunization.
“Measles spread easily through the air, especially in places where people gather closely—like schools,” said Dr. Christina Kay, a medical health officer with Island Health. “With students back to class, we should ensure children are fully immunized to protect them from vaccine-preventable illnesses that can cause serious illness, long-term disability, and even death,” she added.
Island Health has compiled additional health tips for school-aged children, available on their official website. These resources aim to further equip families with the knowledge needed to navigate the school year safely and healthily.
By following these guidelines, families can foster a healthier environment, contributing to the well-being of children and the wider community during this back-to-school season.
