Support Literacy Month in Vernon: Join the Spelling Bee Challenge

September marks Literacy Month, a time to promote reading and learning across communities. In Vernon, the Literacy Society of the North Okanagan is spearheading initiatives to “Raise Readers” of all ages. The Society has made significant strides thanks to the successful Postmedia Raise-a-Reader campaign last year, which reached hundreds of children, families, and seniors in the Greater Vernon area.
The Literacy Society expresses gratitude to the Postmedia Raise-a-Reader campaign and its partners, including the Vernon Morning Star, Decoda Literacy Solutions, and the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. Contributions made during this campaign have a multiplier effect, as every donation received by October 31, 2023 will be enhanced, allowing supporters’ contributions to make an even greater impact.
Join the Excitement of the Spelling Bee Challenge
A highlight of Literacy Month is the eagerly anticipated 16th Annual Adult Spelling Bee Team Challenge, scheduled for October 22, 2023, at the Prestige Vernon Lodge. This lively event kicks off with breakfast and prizes, setting the stage for spirited competition among teams through three rounds of word challenges. Up to 25 teams of eight participants each will vie for the title of champion, adding an element of fun and community spirit.
Participants include familiar names from past events, such as the Okanagan College Eggheads and the reigning champions, the Queen Beez, who will be looking to defend their title. The Spelling Bee has become known for its creative team names and costumes, providing both entertainment and laughter.
Support Literacy Initiatives
Everyone is encouraged to participate, whether by forming a team for the Spelling Bee, purchasing literacy-themed socks, or making a donation to support literacy programs. Every effort contributes to providing individuals with essential tools to read, learn, and thrive in their daily lives.
To register a team for the Spelling Bee or to make a donation, interested parties can visit the Literacy Society’s website or contact them directly at 250-275-3117. Your involvement during Literacy Month can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many in the Vernon community.
Debbie Nurse, representing the Literacy Society of the North Okanagan, emphasizes that every contribution fuels programs that empower individuals, fostering a culture of learning and literacy throughout the region.
