Shawna Mozdzen Sworn in as New School Trustee for Ward 1
Shawna Mozdzen was officially sworn in as the new school trustee for Ward 1 during a special meeting of the Brandon School Division board of trustees on the evening of October 16, 2023. The ceremony marked the beginning of her term following a decisive victory in the recent byelection.
Ceremony Highlights Commitment to Education
During the formal ceremony, Mozdzen raised her right hand and took the oath of office, pledging to “faithfully perform her duties and uphold the trustee code of ethics as a trustee of the Brandon School Division.” The oath was administered by Secretary-Treasurer Denis Labossiere, who also oversaw the signing of official documents in accordance with the Public Schools Act.
Mozdzen expressed enthusiasm about her new role, stating, “I’d like to get started and just work as a board — bring everyone together at the same table and come to great decisions as a board.” Her commitment to collaboration indicates her intention to foster a unified approach within the board.
Priorities Centered on Student Welfare
In her first comments after the ceremony, Mozdzen outlined her priorities, emphasizing her dedication to advocating for students and staff. “Just have my voice heard and speak to what I believe in, like I always do, and just try to do everything that’s right for the students and staff,” she affirmed.
Mozdzen, who has a background as a school support and educational assistant, garnered 2,229 votes, representing 56.7 percent of the total votes cast in the byelection. She triumphed over six other candidates, including Henry Sieklicki, Laura Armitage, Michael Grantham, Bonnie-Lynn Mills, and Eren Oleson. A total of 3,929 votes were cast, including 596 advance polls and sealed ballots, according to the senior election official.
Mozdzen’s campaign focused on creating an inclusive and supportive school environment for students and their families, which resonated with the community. Her strong support in the election reflects a clear mandate to address the needs and concerns of the Ward 1 constituents.
As she embarks on her term, Shawna Mozdzen’s commitment to her role as trustee highlights a proactive approach to educational governance in the Brandon School Division.
