As the Brandon School Division prepares for its trustee byelection on October 16, 2023, candidate Shawna Mozdzen emphasizes her commitment to supporting students and families. Mozdzen, who has worked in various educational roles since 2007, aims to bring a unique perspective to the board and address pressing concerns regarding school safety and community engagement.

Mozdzen has a long history in the local education system, having served in support and educational assistant roles across five schools. Her experiences have provided her with valuable insights into the challenges students face, including learning difficulties and mental health issues. “For me, it’s always been about students and families,” she stated. “When parents are comfortable in schools, students are more comfortable too. That’s why community and family engagement is so critical.”

A Focus on Inclusion and Equity

The candidate’s platform centers on principles of inclusion, equity, and well-being. Mozdzen intends to strengthen communication between families and schools, advocate for enhanced mental health resources, and ensure that teachers receive the necessary tools to focus on teaching and mentoring. Having a background as a Métis and First Nations woman with connections to Kinosota and Ebb and Flow, she aims to incorporate a voice for reconciliation into the school board discussions.

“I’m a firm believer that we need to learn about Indigenous culture and the beauty of it, alongside the difficult history, to move toward reconciliation,” Mozdzen explained. “It may take generations, but every step counts. Schools are a key part of that journey.”

Safety in schools remains another significant concern for Mozdzen, particularly following the violence at École secondaire Neelin High School in June. Recognizing the anxiety this incident has caused among parents, she advocates for preventative measures and the establishment of safe advisory councils, while also acknowledging the need for security enhancements if funding permits.

Personal Commitment to Education

Mozdzen understands the challenges of securing adequate funding, which she identifies as a persistent issue in educational governance. “The board has to stretch every dollar. At the end of the day, it’s about making sure students and families get the support they need,” she said.

As a single mother of two sons who graduated from the Brandon School Division, her personal experiences have grounded her perspective. “I know the school system works — both of my sons succeeded here. Now I want to give back by helping make sure every family feels that same sense of belonging and opportunity,” she noted.

While campaigning is still in its early stages, Mozdzen has received strong encouragement from friends, colleagues, and community members. “I wouldn’t be running if I didn’t think I had a chance,” she asserted. “But more than anything, I want the best person for the job to win — because our schools, students, and families deserve it.”

The byelection was necessitated by the resignation of former trustee Blaine Foley in March. Advanced polls will open on October 8 and October 11, with the general school board election scheduled for October 28, 2026, coinciding with municipal elections.
