Saskatchewan Government Allocates $28.5 Million for Classrooms
The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $28.5 million to the 2025-26 Relocatable Classroom Program, aiming to expand classroom space in response to increasing student enrolment. This investment will fund 39 new relocatable classrooms and the relocation of two existing classrooms, ensuring that educational facilities can adapt to local needs.
Everett Hindley, the province’s Education Minister, highlighted the program’s importance in a media release, stating, “The Relocatable Classroom Program helps us address space pressures by adding classrooms where they are needed most.” He emphasized that this initiative not only responds to enrolment growth but also provides school divisions with the flexibility necessary to manage local demands.
Targeted Locations for New Classrooms
The newly funded classrooms will be distributed across several communities, including Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Blaine Lake, Clavet, Corman Park, Humboldt, Lanigan, and Swift Current. Installation of these classrooms is scheduled for the summer, with the objective of having them ready for the 2026-27 school year.
In a follow-up statement, the Ministry of Education explained the program’s operational framework. School divisions must apply for relocatable classrooms, and requests are assessed and prioritized based on anticipated enrolment figures. This systematic approach aims to ensure that the most pressing needs are met effectively.
Quality and Standards of Relocatable Classrooms
Relocatable classrooms are designed to meet the same building codes and standards as permanent structures, ensuring quality and safety for students and staff. The government has noted that these classrooms can be constructed on site or ordered as pre-fabricated units from vendors. Importantly, they also offer the flexibility to be relocated to different schools if enrolment pressures decrease in specific areas.
Since the inception of the Relocatable Classroom Program in 2013-14, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested a total of $234 million into this initiative. This ongoing commitment underscores the government’s focus on providing quality educational environments that can adapt to changing demographics and enrolment trends.
As the province continues to navigate the challenges associated with educational infrastructure, the Relocatable Classroom Program stands as a critical response to ensuring that all students have access to the learning spaces they need.
