Samantha Smith, a senior at Newman Central Catholic High School, has been awarded the title of Student of the Month for November 2023. This recognition highlights her academic achievements and involvement in extracurricular activities during her high school tenure.

Academic Excellence and Passion for Learning

In discussing her favorite class, Smith expressed enthusiasm for AP Statistics with Mrs. Connie Royer, calling her the best teacher she has ever had. “She does a great job of teaching all of the material, as well as making sure we are all understanding the material,” Smith said. The interactive approach of the class, which includes various activities that complement the curriculum, has made her experience both engaging and enjoyable.

Looking ahead, Smith plans to attend a four-year university to study exercise science, with aspirations of entering physical therapy school thereafter. Although she has not finalized her decision, her top choice is the University of Alabama. Smith hopes to become a manager for a gymnastics team and participate in a study abroad program during her university years.

Commitment to Extracurricular Activities

Smith is actively involved in competitive gymnastics, a commitment she has maintained for the past 15 years, including nine years of competition. She trains over 20 hours a week throughout the year, which has instilled in her essential skills like work ethic, time management, and dedication.

Additionally, she participates in the Dixon Sister Cities Association, a program that fosters international friendships and cultural education. Smith recalls a pivotal experience during her freshman year when she traveled to Herzberg, Germany, through this initiative. “This program has fostered new lifelong friendships, world peace, as well as education about other cultures,” she stated.

One of the most memorable events in her high school journey was a religious retreat called Kairos. “This experience was the best and most memorable one yet from my high school career,” she reflected. Now, as a Kairos leader for the current junior class, she is excited to share this transformative experience with others.

Smith’s aspirations are clear. She hopes to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in exercise science and pursue a career in physical therapy, a passion that solidified after job-shadowing at ORS Physical Therapy in Dixon. Her dedication to both her studies and extracurricular activities exemplifies the spirit of achievement celebrated at Newman Central Catholic High School.
