Midland Activates Speed Traps to Enhance School Zone Safety

Speed traps will be operational in Midland starting September 2, 2023, aimed at improving safety for students returning to school. The initiative focuses on reducing dangerous driving behaviors near educational institutions and community safety zones. This measure has been announced by Mayor Bill Gordon, who emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits in these areas.
The town will replace “Coming Soon” signs with “In Use” signage as the speed cameras become active. “We must display these ‘in use’ signs while the cameras are capturing data,” Gordon stated, urging drivers to maintain the 40 km/hr speed limit. The activation of these cameras is intended to deter speeding and promote safer driving habits.
Two speed cameras will be positioned strategically: one on Yonge Street in front of Mundy’s Bay Public School and another on William Street in front of Sacred Heart Catholic School. The cameras will operate continuously, 24 hours a day, throughout the week. Motorists exceeding the speed limit will start receiving tickets, which will be mailed directly to the vehicle’s registered owner.
The penalties for speeding in these zones will consist solely of fines; no demerit points will be assigned. This approach aims to ensure compliance with speed regulations without further penalizing drivers beyond financial consequences.
By implementing these changes, Midland authorities hope to create a safer environment for children and families as they return to school, reinforcing the community’s commitment to safety.
