Lethbridge Urges Drivers to Stay Alert as Students Return to School

As students prepare to return to school on September 5, 2023, the City of Lethbridge and local law enforcement are emphasizing the importance of road safety. With all playground and school zones in the city designated as 30 km/h zones from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. year-round, drivers are urged to be particularly vigilant.
The Lethbridge Police Service is deploying safety patrollers around schools to assist students and parents in crossing the streets safely. In a statement, Sgt. Tony Ramotowski of the Lethbridge Police Service highlighted the need for caution. “Slow down and be aware,” he advised. “Kids are excited to get back to school, so make sure you’re aware of your surroundings—watch out for children running out between cars and off the bus.”
In addition to the reminders for drivers, Sgt. Ramotowski also stressed the importance of students taking responsibility for their own safety. He encouraged them to use marked crosswalks and avoid distractions when crossing streets.
The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) has also provided guidance for parents dropping off their children on the first day of school. They recommend considering parking further away from the school to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety.
With the return of students to classrooms, both the city and police are taking proactive measures to ensure a safe environment for everyone. As Lethbridge prepares for the new school year, the focus on safety remains paramount for both drivers and pedestrians alike.
