Lethbridge Police Urge Caution as Students Return to School

As students prepare to return to school on September 5, 2023, the City of Lethbridge and local police are emphasizing the importance of road safety. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, particularly in school zones where speed limits are set to 30 km/h year-round. These zones will be actively monitored from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., ensuring a safe environment for children as they transition back to in-person learning.
Increased Vigilance Required
Sgt. Tony Ramotowski from the Lethbridge Police Service highlighted the need for drivers to be particularly aware of their surroundings. “Slow down and be aware,” he stated, noting that children are often excited to return to school and may behave unpredictably. He cautioned that kids may run out from between parked cars or off buses, increasing the risk of accidents.
Safety patrollers will be stationed around schools, assisting students and parents in crossing streets safely. The presence of these patrollers aims to enhance safety measures, providing additional support during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
Advice for Parents and Students
Parents dropping off their children on the first day of school are encouraged to consider parking further away from the school entrance. According to the Alberta Motor Association (AMA), this small adjustment can significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety.
Sgt. Ramotowski emphasized the importance of students taking responsibility for their own safety as well. “The big thing is crossing the street. Use a marked crosswalk and don’t be distracted,” he advised. This reminder serves as a crucial guideline for students navigating their way to and from school.
As the school year begins, collaboration between the city, police, and the community is vital in ensuring a safe return for students. By following these guidelines and remaining alert, both drivers and pedestrians can contribute to a secure environment for everyone involved.
