Hanover School Division Limits Internet Access to Promote Sleep
The Hanover School Division in southeastern Manitoba has implemented a new policy restricting internet access on student laptops during nighttime hours. The decision aims to foster healthier sleep habits among students. As of March 2024, school-issued Chromebooks will have their internet access disabled from midnight to 06:00 each day, while tools within the Google suite, such as Google Docs, will remain available.
In a letter to parents, the division noted an increase in late-night Chromebook usage by students. Assistant Superintendent Marlin Adrian stated, “Research is very clear that strong sleep habits are a key part of success in school.” He emphasized that the laptops are primarily for educational purposes and that the overnight restrictions are intended to support students in achieving better sleep.
The policy took effect on the first day of the new semester, coinciding with the beginning of March. Initial feedback from parents has been positive, according to Adrian, who expressed that the division welcomes any further input from the community. “Our intent is not to monitor and tell students what they can and can’t do on their own devices, but to recognize that these devices are for education,” he added.
Many students have shared their perspectives on the new rules. Tylor Lewis, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Steinbach Regional Secondary School, primarily uses her Chromebook for assignments and studying. She believes the restrictions will not significantly affect her sleep, as she typically goes to bed by 23:00 or midnight. Lewis noted that while some classmates report feeling tired, she does not attribute this to late-night laptop use, suggesting that social activities and other distractions may play a larger role.
Another Grade 11 student, Rojale Brightnose, expressed uncertainty about the necessity of the restrictions, although she understands the school’s rationale. “Some kids stay up a long time,” she acknowledged, adding that the midnight cut-off might help those who struggle with managing their time.
The impact of screen time on sleep and general well-being is an ongoing conversation. Clinical psychologist Jo Ann Unger highlighted that effects vary depending on the nature and duration of screen usage. The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends limited recreational screen time for children, suggesting about one hour for younger kids and no more than two hours for teens.
Unger also pointed out that keeping devices in bedrooms can disrupt sleep, especially if they are not silenced. She advocates for reducing screen time before bed to enhance sleep quality. While she supports the Hanover School Division’s initiative, she posed the question, “Will it make a difference?” Unger acknowledged that the policy is a step towards helping students and families engage less with their devices.
As the Hanover School Division continues to navigate this new policy, the focus remains on fostering a balanced approach to education, social life, and health. The interplay between technology use and student wellness will likely remain a pivotal topic in the future.
