Life as a Part-Time Professor

Dr. Adam Schipper teaches Philosophy and English Literature online from Montreal. His research focuses on the philosophy and politics of housework and domestic labour. Schipper describes a typical day as one filled with teaching, student interactions, and research.

“My day starts with breakfast, followed by classes on Teams,” he explains. “Between classes, I prepare for the next day and respond to student emails while trying to make progress on my own research.” He emphasizes the need for self-discipline, stating that being his own motivator is crucial in balancing various responsibilities.

His work often involves collaboration, although much of it is solitary. “In philosophy, collaboration happens, especially with interdisciplinary projects. I recently worked with a hospice nurse on a paper that intertwines theory and practical nursing,” he noted. However, he acknowledges that individual work predominates in humanities fields.

The Journey Through Academia

Schipper’s path to academia was not linear. After starting his PhD at Queen’s University in 2018, he took a few years away from the academic environment, working in various jobs. “I realized my passion for academia only after exploring other fields,” he recounts.

His PhD journey was marked by the pandemic, which added significant challenges. “The lockdowns were disruptive, but I maintained connections with my cohort and supervisor throughout,” he said. Schipper learned that pursuing a PhD is a marathon, requiring persistence and patience. He dedicated about one to two hours daily to his thesis over several years, culminating in a successful defense.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Schipper acknowledges that academia was always part of his life. With parents who were professors, he grew up surrounded by books and educational discussions. “It never occurred to me that I wouldn’t pursue higher education,” he remarked.

As he encourages others considering a PhD, Schipper’s advice is straightforward: “Don’t compare yourself to others in academia. Everyone’s journey is unique, and focusing on your path is essential.”

Navigating Challenges in the Current Environment

Schipper is acutely aware of the funding cuts affecting universities and the growing competition for academic positions. “There are fewer jobs each year, and the number of applicants continues to increase,” he says. This situation has prompted some academics to transition to non-academic fields, a decision that Schipper does not dismiss for himself.

He also addresses the impact of political and technological changes on education, particularly the rise of AI tools such as ChatGPT. “Students may use AI to complete assignments, which raises concerns about the depth of their learning,” he explained. Schipper believes that this trend stems from universities increasingly being run like businesses, prioritizing profit over the educational experience.

Engaging students in remote settings adds another layer of complexity. He strives to create a personal connection, often using humor to encourage participation. “I like to think of myself as a master of staring contests with my students until someone responds,” he joked. Schipper also records his classes to accommodate students with varied schedules, aiming to make education more accessible.

Philosophy often faces scrutiny regarding its value in contemporary society. Schipper passionately defends the discipline, stating, “Philosophy equips us to tackle complex questions that lack easy answers. It helps us understand the world and ourselves better.” He advocates for introducing philosophy at earlier educational stages to foster critical thinking and rational discourse.
