Carleton University Welcomes Over 3,800 New Students This Weekend

Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, welcomed over 3,800 new students during its move-in weekend, marking a significant transition for many. This event saw both returning and first-time students arriving on campus, ready to start their academic journeys.
Among the newcomers is Ava Barone, who has traveled from Sault Ste. Marie to pursue a degree in health science. Barone expressed her excitement and nerves about living independently for the first time, sharing, “I do have a roommate, who came with me from Sault Ste. Marie, so that’ll be nice to have people who are close.” Upon her arrival, she was warmly welcomed by over 650 staff and volunteers, all dedicated to assisting students as they settled into one of the university’s twelve residences.
The university’s executive director of housing and residence life, Laura Storey, highlighted that the recent opening of the Rideau House, a new residence with 450 beds, has played a crucial role in accommodating students. “It opened this week, and we’ve invited students in there, helping out not only because of the extra beds, but also the amenity spaces that will be opening in that building,” Storey explained.
Many returning students faced challenges securing off-campus housing, often needing to move further away due to limited availability in the city. Storey reassured that the addition of Rideau House has eased some of these concerns. “We’ve been able to accommodate everybody that has asked for a space,” she stated. Although all spots in the new residence have been filled, there are still a few spaces available in other campus housing options, and interested students are encouraged to reach out.
As move-in weekend wraps up on September 3, 2023, students will soon transition into their academic schedules, with classes set to commence after Labour Day. The enthusiasm and support evident during the weekend reflect Carleton University’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for its diverse student body.
This year’s move-in event not only signifies the start of a new academic year but also highlights the university’s ongoing efforts to address housing needs, ensuring that students can focus on their studies and campus life.
