Canadians Celebrate Skills for Success Day to Boost Essential Skills

Canadians are marking Skills for Success Day on September 18, 2025, an initiative designed to highlight the importance of essential skills in education, the workplace, and everyday life. Established in 2010 by ABC Life Literacy Canada, this annual observance aims to raise awareness about the vital skills necessary for personal and professional success.
In recognition of the day, Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) is emphasizing the numerous free resources available to students and educators through its website. The Skills for Success, which replaced the previous term “Essential Skills,” were introduced by the Government of Canada in May 2021. These skills encompass Numeracy, Communication, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Writing, Adaptability, Reading, Creativity & Innovation, and Digital Skills. Together, they form a foundational framework crucial for thriving in a rapidly evolving world.
Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer of SCC, stated, “Skills for Success are more than just workplace tools—they’re life skills. By strengthening them, we give Canadians the ability to succeed in school, advance in their careers, and adapt to a changing world.”
Despite the emphasis on developing these skills, many Canadian workers face challenges. According to a 2023 report by the World Economic Forum, six in ten workers will require skills training before 2027. Currently, only half of these workers have access to adequate training opportunities. This gap underscores the need for initiatives like Skills for Success Day to advocate for improved resources and opportunities.
To further support youth, educators, and career seekers, SCC has developed a variety of tools and resources. These materials are designed to help individuals enhance their skills and better prepare for the demands of the modern workforce. For those interested in exploring these resources, more information is available on the SCC website, along with a mobile application for convenient access.
Skills/Compétences Canada, founded in 1989, operates as a national not-for-profit organization. Its mission involves collaborating with employers, educators, labor groups, and governments to promote skilled trades and technology careers among Canadian youth. This year’s Skills for Success Day serves as a reminder of the critical importance of developing strong skills that are applicable in all areas of life. By prioritizing education and training, Canadians can better equip themselves for the challenges of the future.
