Brandon University Co-op Program Sees Record 72 Students for 2023
Brandon University’s Co-operative Education Program has officially launched its seventh season, welcoming a record 72 students eager to gain hands-on work experience. The program, which kicked off on March 15, 2023, aims to connect students with employment opportunities that align with their academic and career aspirations.
This year’s increase of approximately 16 students highlights a growing interest in experiential learning and reflects a robust partnership with local employers. According to Cora Dupuis, the program’s director, this growth demonstrates “a community that believes in experiential learning.”
Students participating in the program have shared positive experiences that underscore its value. Kendal Giesbrecht, a fifth-year chemistry student, described how the co-op program has been instrumental in her career development. “It gave me some really important industry-relevant skills that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to gain otherwise,” she said. Giesbrecht secured positions with the Pfizer plant in Brandon and a research role in Dresden, Germany, attributing her success to the co-op framework. “It absolutely helped get my foot in the door,” she stated, noting the significant impact of the experience on her resume.
The program not only focuses on job placements but also offers professional development workshops to prepare students for their future careers. Greg Gatien, acting provost and dean of music at Brandon University, emphasized the program’s role in enriching students’ education. “Our students are gaining experience that helps them further identify aspirations, gain confidence, and connect with mentors,” he explained.
This year’s cohort comprises 50 new participants and 22 returning students, each aiming to enrich their academic knowledge with practical experience. Judith Okpe, a third-year accounting student, expressed her eagerness to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. “I learned a lot of stuff in school. Let me apply them in a real-world work setting,” she said.
Alumna Dezarae Bodnar described the mentorship and support from the program as transformative. “The structure of the co-op program helped me to recognize my own strengths and trust in my abilities,” she commented. Bodnar’s experiences have shaped her understanding of her career path, emphasizing the importance of community-building and program development.
Another participant, Kalin Contois, a fifth-year sociology student, shared his perspective on the importance of gaining real-world experience alongside his academic studies. After working as a policy analyst with the government, Contois acknowledged the program’s significant benefits. “I think it really helped me have a leg up,” he noted, highlighting how the co-op experience allowed him to explore his career interests more deeply.
The launch event attracted numerous alumni, current students, and local business leaders, underscoring the strong community support for the program. Students were also offered free professional headshots to enhance their online profiles, further aiding their career readiness.
As Brandon University continues to foster connections between students and the job market, the Co-operative Education Program stands out as a valuable resource for aspiring professionals. With increasing participation and support from the local community, the program is poised for continued success in the years ahead.
