Brandon School Division Superintendent Mathew Gustafson to Retire

Mathew Gustafson, the superintendent of the Brandon School Division, has announced his decision to retire next summer, marking the end of a significant chapter in his educational leadership. Gustafson’s final working day is set for August 7, 2026, allowing the school board ample time to find his successor.
Leadership Legacy and Reflection
This announcement was shared during a general board meeting by board chair Linda Ross, who read Gustafson’s resignation letter aloud. “It is with great difficulty that I give my notice to retire from my role as superintendent and CEO of the Brandon School Division,” she quoted. “I am honoured to have been able to serve the students, parents, and staff since 2002.”
In his letter, Gustafson expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his tenure. “I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside such caring and committed staff,” he stated. His decision to retire follows extensive reflection on his leadership journey. “At a certain point, even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over,” Gustafson explained after the meeting.
He emphasized that his retirement opens new opportunities to engage in different pursuits while still supporting education. The choice of an effective date in 2026 is strategic, allowing for a seamless transition in leadership.
A Commitment to Community and Future Plans
Gustafson joined the Brandon School Division in 2002 and has held senior administrative roles for 11 years, being appointed superintendent in 2021. He hopes his leadership has fostered positive experiences for both students and staff. “What matters most is that students have good memories of their time in school and that I’ve played even a small role in making that possible,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, Gustafson intends to remain active in the community, joking about potentially assisting with agricultural activities. He expressed a desire to volunteer and maintain some involvement in the education sector.
During the board meeting, Ross commended Gustafson for his steady leadership and unwavering dedication to the division. “I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent,” she said. “It has been a pleasure working with you.”
Deputy chair Duncan Ross praised Gustafson as a “steadfast rock of competency,” noting the trust he has built with the board. Trustee Kim Fallis highlighted Gustafson’s preparedness, stating, “You were always ready with the answers we needed.”
As Gustafson prepares to transition out of his role, the Brandon School Division reflects on his impactful contributions and the legacy he leaves behind. The board’s appreciation resonates as they look forward to finding a successor who can carry on his vision for the school community.
