Brandon School Division Superintendent Mathew Gustafson to Retire

Mathew Gustafson, the superintendent of the Brandon School Division, has announced his retirement, effective August 7, 2026. This decision was shared by board chair Linda Ross during a general board meeting held on Tuesday evening. Gustafson has served the division since 2002, taking on the role of superintendent in early 2021.
In his resignation letter, Gustafson expressed the difficulty of his decision. “It is with great difficulty that I give my notice to retire from my role as superintendent and CEO of the Brandon School Division,” he stated. He emphasized his gratitude for the opportunity to work with students, parents, and staff throughout his tenure.
Gustafson credited his accomplishments to the collaboration and professionalism of his colleagues. “I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside such caring and committed staff,” he reflected. His announcement follows extensive reflection on his leadership journey, where he noted the importance of stepping aside to allow new leadership to emerge.
After the meeting, Gustafson mentioned, “At a certain point, even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over.” He also indicated that his retirement would provide him the opportunity to engage in other pursuits while continuing to support education in different ways.
The decision to retire in 2026 aligns with Gustafson’s intention to allow the school board ample time to find a suitable successor. Over his 11 years in senior administration, he has aimed to create positive experiences for both students and staff. “What matters most is that students have good memories of their time in school,” he remarked.
During the board meeting, Ross praised Gustafson for his steady leadership and dedication to the division. “I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent,” she said. Her sentiments were echoed by deputy chair Duncan Ross, who described Gustafson as a “steadfast rock of competency.”
Trustee Kim Fallis highlighted Gustafson’s professionalism, stating, “Your main goal has always been the success of parents and students in BSD, and that dedication has shown in everything you’ve done.”
Looking ahead, Gustafson plans to remain active in the community. He humorously suggested he might assist his brother-in-law with farming activities in the fall, but he also hopes to volunteer and maintain involvement in education.
As Gustafson prepares for this new chapter, he leaves behind a legacy of commitment and service that has significantly impacted the Brandon School Division and its community.
