Adam Schipper Discusses Life as a Philosophy Professor
In a recent interview, Adam Schipper, a graduate of Neelin High School in 2007, shared insights into his journey as a part-time professor of Philosophy and English Literature at Brandon University. Currently residing in Montreal, Schipper’s experiences reflect the challenges and rewards of pursuing an academic career, particularly in the wake of significant educational changes.
Academic Background and Career Progression
Schipper obtained his PhD in Philosophy from Queens University in Kingston in 2022, after a brief hiatus from academia during which he explored various jobs. He described his return to the academic field as a pivotal moment that aligned with his true passions. “I loved my time at Queens,” Schipper noted, highlighting the camaraderie he developed with fellow students during his studies. However, his PhD journey was not without challenges, as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional learning environments.
“The lockdowns were incredibly disruptive,” Schipper reflected. “Yet, I was fortunate to have a supportive cohort and supervisor.” His experiences taught him valuable lessons about patience and self-discipline, skills essential for balancing research, teaching, and personal life. He emphasized that successfully completing a PhD requires a long-term commitment, comparing the process to a marathon rather than a sprint.
Teaching Philosophy and Challenges
Schipper is passionate about teaching and engages with students through a dynamic online format. His typical day involves preparing lectures, responding to student inquiries, and working on scholarly articles. He pointed out that teaching in a remote environment poses unique challenges, particularly in establishing connections with students. “I try to appeal to their humanity,” he explained, using personal engagement to encourage participation.
As universities face funding cuts, Schipper acknowledged the competitive landscape for academic positions. “Every year there are fewer jobs and more applicants,” he noted, reflecting on the increasing difficulty for newly-graduated PhDs to secure full-time roles. Despite the challenges, Schipper remains optimistic about his teaching career, leveraging his experience to navigate the complexities of the academic job market.
In discussing the impact of technology on education, Schipper expressed concern about the use of artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, by students to complete assignments. He believes these tools can undermine the educational process by allowing students to bypass critical thinking and personal growth opportunities. “It’s important to challenge oneself and engage deeply with the material,” he stated, underscoring the value of philosophical inquiry in personal development.
Schipper’s perspective on the purpose of education highlights a broader societal issue. He believes that universities should foster a space for intellectual exploration rather than merely serving as a gateway to employment. “We should pursue education for its own sake,” he argued, advocating for a more holistic approach to learning that encourages students to grapple with complex questions.
In conclusion, Adam Schipper’s journey through academia illustrates both the rewards and challenges inherent in a career in education. His commitment to philosophy and teaching reflects a dedication to nurturing thoughtful engagement with the world, a pursuit he believes is essential for personal and societal growth.
