Sultan Ahmet Turkish Cuisine Reopens in Glebe After Closure

Sultan Ahmet Turkish Cuisine, located in the Glebe district of Ottawa, has reopened under new management after being closed for over a month. The restaurant, which occupies the former site of the Clocktower Pub, had been shut since early July due to rent arrears.
The establishment is part of a chain that originated in Toronto and opened its Glebe location in April 2024. Following its unexpected closure, Ahmet Dogan, the founder of Sultan Ahmet, explained in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen that a payment dispute had arisen between the owners. This disagreement ultimately led to the restaurant’s temporary shutdown.
New Management Takes Over
On Sunday, a post on the restaurant’s Instagram account announced its reopening, signaling a new chapter for the establishment. The restaurant is now poised to serve its signature menu, which features a variety of traditional Turkish dishes, including kebabs and flatbreads known as pide.
Attempts to contact the former Ottawa-based owner of the restaurant, as well as one of its Toronto locations, were unsuccessful on Monday morning. This reopening comes at a time when Turkish cuisine is gaining popularity in the Ottawa area, with several new restaurants emerging in recent years.
Growing Turkish Culinary Scene in Ottawa
The resurgence of Turkish restaurants in the region has introduced diners to an array of hearty meals. Establishments such as A La Istanbul Turkish Cuisine on Rideau Street, Agha Turkish Restaurant Ottawa on Merivale Road, and a second location of Pita Bell Kabab on Bank Street are among those contributing to this culinary trend.
Food enthusiasts in Ottawa have taken notice of these new offerings. Restaurant reviews by food critic Peter Hum highlight various Turkish dining experiences throughout the region, including his assessments of Tava Turkish Cuisine in Kanata and Turkish Kebab House, also in Kanata.
