Costco Canada Issues Urgent Recall of Contaminated Chocolates

Costco Canada has initiated a refund process following a recall of two chocolate products due to potential health risks from food contamination. The recall, announced on January 8, 2024, involves chocolates produced by the Nova Scotia-based company Peace by Chocolate. The affected items are The Harmony Bar and the Classic Box of 15 assorted filled chocolates, both of which were sold online between September 7 and December 3, 2023.

The voluntary recall stems from concerns regarding specific pistachio-containing chocolates. This action was prompted by a recall from Tootsi Impex Inc., a supplier of ingredients for Peace by Chocolate, which reported possible Salmonella contamination in a particular lot of pistachios. It is important to note that the recall does not extend to other products within the Peace by Chocolate variety packs.

Salmonella can pose significant health risks, often leading to illness even in products that appear safe. Symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. So far, Peace by Chocolate has confirmed that there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled products.

Customers are advised to refrain from consuming any of the affected products. For a full refund, consumers may return either the affected items or the entire variety pack to any Costco warehouse. Peace by Chocolate has provided contact information for further inquiries, reachable at [email protected] or by telephone at 1 (855) 970-1414, ext. 0.

Growing Concerns Over Pistachio Products

This recall is part of a wider trend in Canada, where several recalls related to pistachios and pistachio-containing products have been reported. Notably, as of December 2023, pistachios sourced from Iran have been implicated in numerous recalls due to Salmonella contamination, leading to over 150 reported illnesses and at least 24 hospitalizations.

As consumer awareness increases regarding food safety, companies are advised to take proactive measures in ensuring the safety of their products. The collaboration between suppliers and retailers is critical in addressing these risks effectively.

In light of this incident, the importance of vigilance regarding food safety cannot be overstated. Customers are encouraged to stay informed about potential recalls and to prioritize their health and safety when it comes to food products.
