The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) has officially introduced livestreaming of its board meetings, a significant shift aimed at increasing transparency and community engagement. This change, initiated in the spring of 2023, comes after a period of restrictions on video and audio recordings that lasted two years, which were implemented due to safety concerns expressed by trustees and staff.

In 2023, the board had mandated that all guests sign in, increased security personnel at meetings, and prohibited livestreaming. As outlined by a board spokesperson in an interview with 570 NewsRadio, these measures were designed to ensure a secure environment for all participants. However, in April 2023, the board reversed its decision regarding the prohibition on livestreaming, paving the way for the return of digital access to meetings.

The first livestreamed meeting of the new school year took place on Monday, September 25, 2023. “Our first livestreamed Board meeting went smoothly, with just under five community members tuning in,” stated Lema Salaymeh, senior manager of communications at WCDSB. “We’re pleased the technology worked well and grateful to those who joined us.”

As the WCDSB seeks to enhance its connection with families and community members, Salaymeh expressed confidence that awareness of this new feature will grow. She anticipates that more individuals will take advantage of the opportunity to engage with board discussions throughout the academic year.

For those interested in participating remotely, the meetings can be accessed via the WCDSB website, with recordings available on the board’s YouTube channel shortly after each meeting concludes. This initiative reflects the board’s commitment to transparency and the importance of community involvement in educational governance.

As the school year progresses, the WCDSB aims to foster an inclusive environment where stakeholders can stay informed and engaged in the decision-making processes that affect their schools. The return of livestreaming represents a step toward rebuilding trust and ensuring that all voices can be heard.
