Every year on November 11, Canadians observe Remembrance Day to honour the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers. In Vancouver, this day will feature various ceremonies, parades, and events that pay tribute to those who served. Many businesses and public services will adjust their hours in recognition of the statutory holiday. Here’s a detailed overview of what will be open and closed in Vancouver on this significant day.

Business Hours on Remembrance Day

A variety of grocery stores will remain open for those needing to stock up. Notable stores include Safeway, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Costco, among others. Most BC Liquor Stores in the Metro Vancouver area will also operate from noon to 6 p.m., although hours may vary by location.

Public schools across Vancouver, serving students from kindergarten to grade 12, will be closed for the day, allowing families to participate in commemorative activities.

Shopping malls will offer varying hours. For instance, CF Pacific Centre Mall will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., while Metropolis will follow suit with the same hours. Other large malls like Park Royal and Guildford Town Centre will also maintain similar opening times.

Pharmacies, including Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs, will be open, providing essential services to the community.

Public Services and Attractions

Public transit will see some changes on Remembrance Day. The TransLink Customer Service Centre and other offices will be closed. However, transit services will be free for veterans, active Armed Forces members, police officers, firefighters, Coast Guard personnel, BC Ambulance paramedics, and employees from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Most Canada Post offices will be closed, although privately operated locations may be open if the host business is operational.

Libraries across the city will be largely closed, with the exception of Vancouver’s Carnegie Reading Room, which will remain open for visitors.

Several popular attractions will welcome guests as well. Science World will operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the Vancouver Aquarium and VanDusen Botanical Garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As Vancouver prepares for Remembrance Day, residents are encouraged to participate in local events and take the time to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members. This annual observance not only honours the past but also strengthens community bonds through shared remembrance.
