The UNBC Timberwolves extended their losing streak to seven games following a 61-40 defeat against the UBC Okanagan Heat on March 2, 2024, in Kelowna. Despite a competitive effort, the Timberwolves were outscored 20-9 in the fourth quarter, leading to a weekend sweep for UBCO, who improved their record to 5-3.

The game began with UBCO establishing an early lead, thanks to scoring contributions from Lily Pink, Tennyson McCarthy, and Tsuki Tsuzuki. The Heat jumped ahead with a 7-2 run, but the Timberwolves quickly responded. Amrit Manak and Claire Huang provided the initial spark for UNBC, helping to keep the score close. By the end of the first quarter, UBCO led 16-9 after a late three-pointer from Kiana Kaczur.

The second quarter brought a defensive struggle, with both teams combining for just six points in the opening three minutes. Aurora Cabrera’s efforts, including a field goal that cut the deficit to 19-14, showcased UNBC’s determination. A series of free throws and a three-pointer from Viktoriia Filatova brought the Timberwolves within one point at 21-20. However, UBCO pulled away again, with McCarthy and Tsuzuki scoring before halftime, leaving the score at 27-20 in favor of the Heat.

At halftime, Cabrera led UNBC with seven points and four rebounds, while McCarthy had eight points for UBCO. Ava Heppner dominated the boards for the Heat with eight rebounds in the first half.

The Timberwolves showed resilience as the third quarter commenced, with Huang and Manak scoring back-to-back layups to reduce the deficit to 27-24. However, UBCO answered with a decisive 10-3 run, extending their lead to 41-31 by the end of the quarter.

UNBC’s offensive struggles continued into the final quarter, where UBCO’s defense proved too strong. The Timberwolves could not capitalize on opportunities, and the Heat ultimately secured a comfortable victory. This loss followed a 72-48 defeat to UBCO the previous day.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves will aim to break their losing streak as they prepare for a road trip to face the University of the Fraser Valley next weekend. The games are scheduled for March 8 and March 9, 2024.
