The Sooke Apple Festival took place on September 21, 2023, celebrating nearly two decades of harvest and community spirit. Hosted by Sooke Food CHI, this annual event marks the culmination of the apple harvest season and fosters connections among local residents who share a passion for this cherished fruit.

Jessica Prieto, vice-president of Sooke Food CHI, highlighted the festival’s purpose: “This event is to celebrate the orchard that we manage. It’s just to bring the community together and celebrate the end of the season.” The festival, which originated in 2007, emerged when the organization acquired land for an orchard on Phillips Road in Sooke. Now recognized as the Sunriver Orchard and Allotment Gardens, the site features more than 55 apple trees, alongside quince, pear, and walnut trees, as well as kiwi vines.

The success of the festival is largely attributed to the unwavering commitment of eight volunteers who continue to manage the orchard. Their dedication has enabled the event to grow and thrive, showcasing the importance of community involvement in local agriculture.

In addition to celebrating apples, the festival offered attendees a chance to explore a diverse selection of local products and food vendors. Visitors could sample apples in various forms, from fresh slices to homemade cider, enhancing the festive atmosphere. The event also catered to families, featuring activities for children, including an Apple ID station where kids could learn about different apple varieties.

The festival served a dual purpose as a fundraiser, with admission by donation. Proceeds directly support the volunteers and ongoing efforts to maintain the orchard, ensuring that this community resource remains sustainable for years to come.
