The Seneca football team delivered an impressive performance on September 29, 2023, defeating Clinton with a decisive score of 50-0 at Sprague Field. This victory marked Seneca’s third consecutive win of the season, improving their record to 3-0, while Clinton fell to 0-3.

Seneca’s offensive strategy began to take shape in the first quarter. After a touchdown run, the Maroons faced setbacks with a pair of losses on downs. However, they quickly regained momentum with a 13-play drive that advanced the ball from their own 10-yard line to the Fighting Irish’s 3-yard line. A critical defensive stop by Seneca on fourth down turned the tide. Senior running back Cam Shriey then broke free for a stunning 92-yard touchdown run, solidifying Seneca’s control over the game.

The Maroons extended their lead to 28-0 by halftime, following a series of impressive plays, including a 25-yard touchdown run by quarterback Gunner Varland and an 8-yard run by Ethan Othon just before the break. “That defensive stop and then the huge run a couple of plays later really switched the momentum to our side,” said Seneca coach Terry Maxwell.

In the second half, Seneca continued to dominate. Othon intercepted a pass, leading to a 14-yard touchdown run by Brayden Simek. Following the ensuing kickoff, Shriey scored again from the 2-yard line, pushing the score to 43-0 and initiating a running clock. The final touchdown came from a 1-yard run by Devon Daemicke.

Seneca’s ground game was formidable, amassing a total of 419 yards on 46 attempts. Shriey led the charge with an impressive 199 yards on just 11 carries. Varland contributed 63 yards, while Othon added 33. In terms of special teams, Cooper Hamilton successfully converted both of his PAT kicks.

Defensively, Seneca was equally strong, allowing only 67 rushing yards and 55 passing yards. Key defensive plays included sacks by Landen Venecia, Wyatt Biffany, and Landyn Ramsey, along with a fumble recovery by Wyatt Holman. “When a team gets down inside the 10, you just have to be as physical as you can, and we did that,” Venecia noted.

Despite their overwhelming victory, the Maroons initially struggled to find their rhythm on offense. “We struggled a little on offense to start the game, but some of the struggle was helping us understand what was going to work down the line,” said senior tight end/defensive end Zebadiah Maxwell. As the game progressed, the team adjusted effectively to Clinton’s defense, allowing them to execute their game plan successfully.

Next week, Seneca will take to the road once again, this time facing Genoa-Kingston. With their current momentum, the team looks poised to continue their winning streak.
