Saskatchewan Roughriders Clinch Playoff Spot with Key Win

The Saskatchewan Roughriders secured first place in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL) following a 27-19 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on November 3, 2023. With this win, the Roughriders improved their record to 12-4 and ensured they will host the West Final at Mosaic Stadium on November 8, where they will compete for a chance to advance to the Grey Cup the following weekend in Winnipeg.
While the achievement of clinching the top spot is significant, players acknowledged in their postgame comments that the title of West Division champions is not yet theirs. The team faces critical decisions regarding veteran playing time in the remaining two regular-season games, particularly with an upcoming matchup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Game Highlights and Performance Analysis
Entering Week 19, the Roughriders needed only one win from their final three games to secure first place. The Argonauts, already eliminated from playoff contention, started quarterback Jarrett Doege, who has limited experience in the CFL. Expectations were low for the Argonauts, leaving many observers curious to see if the Roughriders would take control of the game.
The Roughriders did just that, though not in a dominant fashion. Linebacker A.J. Allen made a crucial interception in the final minute, sealing the victory. Kicker Brett Lauther also shone, successfully converting all five of his field goal attempts, which could build his confidence as the playoffs approach.
Despite their victory, the Roughriders’ performance drew mixed reviews. Some critics noted that the team should have scored more touchdowns rather than relying heavily on Lauther’s kicking. Although quarterback Trevor Harris expressed satisfaction with the offensive movement, the overall execution raised questions.
The game’s tone shifted in the third quarter when a fumble by running back A.J. Ouellette led to a Toronto touchdown, narrowing the score. Yet, Saskatchewan responded effectively, with Harris connecting with Tommy Nield for a touchdown on the very next drive, maintaining their lead.
Strategic Decisions and Player Health
As the Roughriders move closer to the playoffs, discussions around strategy become paramount. The team’s last four games lacked the intensity seen in earlier matches against rivals such as the Blue Bombers, Hamilton, and Calgary. With two games left, Saskatchewan is left to fine-tune their performance while preparing for a crucial playoff match.
In terms of strategy, the Roughriders made a bold choice in the closing minutes of the game against Toronto. Opting for a risky play on third-and-short rather than kicking a field goal, the decision initially appeared to backfire when third-string quarterback Jack Coan was stopped short. However, a successful challenge from head coach Corey Mace resulted in a favorable spot, allowing Saskatchewan to maintain possession and later score.
Injury concerns also loom large as the Roughriders navigate the final stretch of the season. Star receiver KeeSean Johnson left the game with a right knee injury, and while no immediate update on his status has been provided, the team is hopeful he can recover in time for the West Final. The management will aim to balance getting players healthy while also ensuring they are game-ready.
As the Roughriders prepare for their next game in Winnipeg, questions arise regarding quarterback usage. While Harris has shown eagerness to play, it may be prudent to allow other quarterbacks, such as Jake Maier or Coan, to gain valuable experience as the playoffs approach.
With the stakes now higher than ever, the Roughriders are set for an intense few weeks, leading into a critical playoff season. How they manage their roster and maintain their momentum will be crucial as they look to secure their path to the Grey Cup.
