Personal Trainers Offer Strategies to Maintain New Year’s Resolutions
As the calendar turns to a new year, many individuals set ambitious goals, often in the form of New Year’s resolutions. However, maintaining motivation beyond the initial weeks of January can be a significant challenge. To address this issue, personal trainers in St. John’s have shared their insights on effective strategies for sustaining commitment to fitness goals throughout the year.
Understanding Common Resolutions
According to the trainers consulted by the CBC’s Arlette Lazarenko, common resolutions often include commitments to exercise more, eat healthier, and lose weight. These goals reflect a widespread desire for improved health and wellness. However, the excitement that accompanies the New Year often fades quickly, leading many to abandon their resolutions by February.
To counteract this trend, trainers emphasize the importance of setting realistic and achievable objectives. Personal trainer Sarah Thompson suggests that individuals should focus on incremental goals rather than overwhelming targets. “Instead of aiming to lose a significant amount of weight in a month, try setting a goal to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week,” she advises. This approach allows for steady progress and promotes long-term sustainability.
Practical Tips for Consistency
In addition to setting realistic goals, trainers recommend several practical strategies to help individuals remain committed. One of the most effective methods is to establish a structured routine. Trainer Mark Johnson highlights the benefits of scheduling workouts just like any other appointment. “Consistency is key. If you treat your workout times as non-negotiable, you’re more likely to stick with them,” he explains.
Another vital aspect of maintaining motivation is finding social support. Engaging with a workout partner or joining a fitness community can provide encouragement and accountability. Trainer Lisa Brown notes that exercising with others can make workouts more enjoyable and foster a sense of camaraderie. “When you have someone counting on you, it makes it harder to skip a session,” she adds.
Personal trainers also advocate for diversifying workout routines to prevent boredom. Incorporating different types of exercises, such as strength training, cardio, and flexibility work, can keep individuals engaged and motivated. “It’s important to keep things fresh,” says Johnson. “Trying new classes or activities can reignite your passion for fitness.”
Another key strategy is to celebrate small victories. Recognizing and rewarding progress, no matter how minor, helps reinforce positive behaviors. Personal trainer Emily Carter encourages clients to acknowledge their achievements, stating, “Every step forward is worth celebrating. Whether it’s a new personal best or simply sticking to your routine for a week, make sure to reward yourself.”
Lastly, trainers stress the importance of self-compassion. Resilience in the face of setbacks is crucial for long-term success. “There will be days when you miss a workout or indulge in unhealthy food. That’s okay,” notes Thompson. “What matters is getting back on track and not letting one slip derail your entire journey.”
As many embark on their fitness journeys this January, the insights shared by trainers in St. John’s serve as a reminder that perseverance and adaptability are essential in achieving New Year’s resolutions. By setting realistic goals, establishing supportive networks, and embracing flexibility, individuals can transform their aspirations into lasting habits throughout the year.
