Partnership Preserves 197 Affordable Homes in Dartmouth and Truro

A new partnership between the provincial government of Nova Scotia and the community organization Rooted aims to preserve a total of 197 affordable housing units in Dartmouth and Truro. The government has allocated nearly $7 million in grants and loans to facilitate the purchase of six properties, three located in each municipality.
The properties acquired include 19 Primrose Street and 2 and 4 Franklyn Court in Dartmouth. This initiative ensures that current tenants will be able to remain in their affordable homes for the foreseeable future. According to the provincial government, these units will maintain their affordability for a minimum of 30 years or until the mortgages mature.
The CEO of Rooted, Nick Russell, highlighted the significance of the province’s funding programs in enabling the organization to expand its portfolio and safeguard the affordability of additional housing units across Nova Scotia. “The impact of housing as critical infrastructure extends to job creation, local economic development, and, most importantly, creates the environment for communities to thrive,” Russell stated.
The provincial government has been active in addressing housing needs, having invested over $283 million to support the creation and preservation of 3,054 affordable units since the beginning of 2021. This latest initiative contributes to ongoing efforts to strengthen the availability of affordable housing in the region.
The partnership between the government and Rooted reflects a growing recognition of the need for affordable housing solutions, especially in urban areas like Dartmouth and Truro. As demand for affordable housing continues to rise, such collaborations may play a crucial role in ensuring that communities can thrive without the burden of excessive housing costs.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the stability of housing for many residents, showcasing a commitment to maintaining affordable living conditions in Nova Scotia.
