A new wildfire has ignited east of Port Alberni, British Columbia, in the area of Yellow Creek. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reported the blaze, which was added to their wildfire map shortly after 18:00 on October 3, 2023. The fire is currently estimated to cover less than one hectare.

In a subsequent update released just before 22:00, BCWS adjusted the fire’s status from ‘out of control’ to ‘being held.’ This indicates that firefighting efforts are successfully managing the situation and preventing the fire from spreading further. The new fire is located strategically between two other active wildfires: the Mt. Underwood Wildfire, situated south of Port Alberni and also classified as ‘being held,’ and the Wesley Ridge fire, near Cameron Lake, which is currently ‘under control.’

As of now, the cause of this recent wildfire remains under investigation. The BC Wildfire Service continues to monitor the situation closely and is working to ensure the safety of local residents and the surrounding environment.

Officials have reminded the public of the importance of fire safety, especially during this time of year when wildfires are more prevalent. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official channels and to report any suspicious activity that could lead to wildfires.

For those in the area, BCWS has recommended preparing emergency plans and having an evacuation route ready, should conditions change. The wildfire service remains committed to safeguarding the community and minimizing the impact of wildfires in British Columbia.
