The Mercer Bears achieved a decisive victory over the Chattanooga Mocs on November 4, 2023, winning 63-17 in a Southern Conference (SoCon) matchup. This impressive performance saw seven different players score touchdowns, highlighting the team’s offensive depth.

Freshman quarterback Braden Atkinson led the charge, throwing five touchdown passes and amassing 326 yards through the air. His ability to connect with a variety of receivers proved crucial, as four different players caught touchdown passes during the game. Atkinson has consistently demonstrated his skill this season, surpassing 300 passing yards in all but one game for the Bears, who now boast a record of 9-1 and remain undefeated in SoCon play at 8-0.

Mercer’s victory not only marks another impressive performance but also secures them the SoCon championship for the second consecutive year. They are the first team to achieve this feat since Appalachian State in 2008-09. The Bears’ offensive showcase was complemented by strong contributions from their receiving corps. Malik Simmons made the most of his opportunities, catching both passes thrown his way for a total of 39 yards and two touchdowns. Other notable performances included touchdown receptions from Adjatay Dabbs, Adonis McDaniel, and Brayden Smith.

On the other side, the Mocs, now with a record of 5-6 and 4-3 in SoCon play, struggled to contain Mercer’s potent offense. Markell Quick was a bright spot for Chattanooga, catching three of his five targets for 75 yards and a touchdown. Despite the loss, Quick’s performance showcased his ability to make significant plays.

The Bears’ commanding win not only highlights their offensive capabilities but also solidifies their position as a leading team in the FCS. With a strong finish to the regular season, Mercer is poised for a competitive playoff run. As they continue to build momentum, the Bears will look to maintain their form heading into future matchups.
