In a significant cultural initiative, the Four Winds event will take place at the Malahat SkyWalk, in collaboration with the Malahat Nation, on September 27 and 28, 2023. This two-day celebration aims to honour and connect visitors with Indigenous culture through the artistic expressions of Indigenous artists, makers, and entrepreneurs from several nations on Vancouver Island.

Nathan Bird, general manager of Malahat SkyWalk, expressed pride in launching the event. “We are proud to introduce Four Winds at Malahat SkyWalk, created in collaboration with Malahat Nation and hosted on their territory,” he stated in a recent press release. Bird highlighted that the event focuses on connection, honouring, and celebrating Indigenous culture. He also noted the intention to raise awareness about the history and traditions of First Nations.

The Four Winds event invites attendees to engage in a rich cultural experience set against the backdrop of a stunning natural environment. The program will feature a variety of activities, including Indigenous dance, drumming, singing, and culinary experiences. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore an artisan market showcasing jewellery, crafts, and live demonstrations in Indigenous carving, drum making, and rattle making.

Community Engagement Through Culture

Entertainment will be provided by the Cowichan Tzinquaw Dance Group and the Growingthunder/Runningbear Family, who will perform throughout the event. By participating in this celebration, guests can gain deeper insights into Indigenous traditions and artistry, fostering a greater appreciation for these cultures.

Malahat SkyWalk is making the event accessible by offering a free shuttle service from Victoria, ensuring that a wider audience can partake in this unique opportunity. For further details regarding the event and shuttle service, interested individuals can visit the Malahat SkyWalk website or contact their customer service.

With the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaching, the Four Winds event serves as a timely reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating Indigenous heritage within the broader community. This collaboration not only showcases Indigenous talent but also promotes a dialogue about cultural understanding and respect.
