India faced a challenging situation on day three of the first Test against South Africa, struggling at 10-2 while chasing a target of 124 runs for victory. The team’s captain, Shubman Gill, was hospitalized after suffering a neck spasm during his innings on day two. Following his hospitalization, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill would not return to the match, leaving India effectively at 10-3, requiring another 114 runs to secure a win.

The pressure mounted as India resumed play with Washington Sundar on 5 not out and Dhruv Jurel on 4 not out at lunchtime. In a brief seven-over session before the break, Marco Jansen made a significant impact by dismissing both openers. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a four-ball duck, caught behind, quickly followed by Lokesh Rahul, who managed just one run before also being caught behind.

South Africa’s second innings concluded at 153 runs, adding 60 crucial runs to their overnight score of 93-7. Captain Temba Bavuma stood out with an unbeaten 55 runs off 136 balls, marking the only half-century in the match across both teams. His partnership with Corbin Bosch, which yielded 44 runs for the eighth wicket, proved pivotal in building a challenging target for India. Bosch contributed 25 runs off 37 balls, including two fours and a six.

Despite the pressure, Bavuma guided his team expertly, reaching his half-century off 122 balls. South Africa managed 51 runs in the first hour of play before Jasprit Bumrah broke through by dismissing Bosch in the 48th over. Mohammed Siraj then struck twice in the 54th over, concluding the Proteas’ innings.

The match has been brisk, with a total of 15 wickets falling on day two alone. India responded to South Africa’s first innings total of 159 runs with 189 runs, showcasing a competitive spirit. The historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata is hosting its first Test match since 2019, and South Africa hasn’t secured a Test victory in India in 15 years, with their last series win dating back to 2000-01.

Looking ahead, the second Test is scheduled to begin in Guwahati on November 22, 2023, as both teams look to secure crucial points in this ongoing series. As the first Test unfolds, the stakes remain high for India, who must regroup quickly to counter South Africa’s challenge.
