The popular Jazz Vespers series has officially begun in North Saanich, featuring acclaimed musician Morry Stearns on September 7. The Victoria-based singer, songwriter, and pianist has an impressive musical pedigree, having collaborated with renowned artists such as Celine Dion, Nelly Furtado, and Bryan Adams. Stearns is particularly noted for his Grammy-nominated work as a songwriter on Peabo Bryson‘s album, *Unconditional Love*.

Stearns will take the stage at St. John’s United Church, located at 10990 West Saanich Rd., across from Deep Cove School. He will be accompanied by bassist Joey Smith, who has a history of touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and drummer Bradley Clarke. The evening’s service will be led by St. John’s new minister, Rev. John Crowdis, who is set to guide attendees through the spiritual and musical experience.

Upcoming Performances and Community Support

The Jazz Vespers series will continue with additional performances scheduled throughout the fall and into early winter. On October 5, the ensemble known as Broke and Blue will present selections from Claude Bolling‘s acclaimed *Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio*. Following that, on November 2, pianist David Vest and his trio will showcase a lively mix of Southern-inspired boogie and blues.

The series will culminate on January 4, when audience favorite Karel Roessingh returns to perform a combination of jazz standards and original compositions. Each Jazz Vespers service begins at 19:00 and includes a suggested donation of $20 per person. This contribution will help support the musicians and sustain the Vespers program.

Jazz Vespers not only offers a unique blend of music and spirituality but also fosters a sense of community among attendees. The intimate setting at St. John’s United Church provides an opportunity for locals to enjoy high-quality performances while contributing to the arts.

As the series unfolds, Stearns and the other participating musicians promise to deliver captivating performances that enrich the cultural fabric of North Saanich. Attendees can look forward to an engaging experience filled with both musical talent and community spirit.
