Exploring the Enduring Relevance of Christian Discipleship Today

Christian discipleship continues to hold significant relevance in the modern world, transcending the boundaries of organized religion. For many, the terms “spiritual” and “religious” evoke different sentiments, with some individuals identifying as “spiritual, not religious.” This distinction often arises from a long-standing critique of institutional religion, which has been associated with historical injustices, including persecution, colonization, and discrimination.
The journey of discipleship, rooted in the teachings of Jesus, emphasizes lifelong learning and active engagement with the world. Julianne Kasmer, an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada and retired chaplain at Our Place Society, highlights this perspective by relating the concept of discipleship to a broader commitment to social justice and environmental stewardship.
Historical Context of Discipleship
Throughout history, the practice of discipleship has inspired individuals to take courageous stands against oppression. Notable figures such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer exemplified this commitment during the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany. Bonhoeffer was a key architect of the Barmen Declaration, which rejected the integration of Nazi ideology into the church. His actions ultimately led to his arrest and execution in April 1945, just before the liberation of Flossenburg concentration camp.
Discipleship has also spurred ordinary individuals to risk their lives for others, such as those who concealed Jewish families during World War II. The same spirit motivates activists today who fight for civil rights, environmental justice, and the welfare of marginalized communities. As Sallie McFague, a prominent eco-theologian, notes, discipleship is fundamentally about “loving the world.” This love manifests in action, requiring individuals to confront societal issues rather than merely appreciating the beauty of creation.
Modern Implications of Discipleship
Engaging in discipleship today involves acknowledging the interconnectedness of global challenges and personal responsibilities. It compels individuals to step beyond their comfort zones and prioritize the needs of those who are marginalized. Faithful practice, according to religious teachings, extends to feeding the hungry, caring for widows and orphans, and advocating for justice.
The notion that religion should remain apolitical is increasingly challenged. Discipleship calls for action that aligns with ethical principles, demanding that individuals use their privilege to amplify the voices of the silenced. Dorothee Soelle emphasizes the transformative power of religion, arguing that it should not only observe but actively interpret the plight of the hungry and oppressed as our kin.
The call to discipleship is not confined to those within religious circles. People from diverse professions—whether they are doctors, teachers, or artists—can embody the principles of lifelong learning and social responsibility. This universal approach to discipleship encourages all individuals to contribute to the common good, fostering a more just and equitable society.
In conclusion, the relevance of Christian discipleship persists across generations. It encourages a commitment to learning, social justice, and the ethical treatment of all individuals. Through active engagement, discipleship transforms personal faith into collective action, reminding us that true spirituality involves both love for creation and justice for humanity.
