Explore the Natural Wonders of Pool 13 on the Mighty Mississippi
The Mississippi River, often referred to as the “Mighty Mississippi,” stretches approximately 2,340 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. This iconic waterway serves as a crucial conduit for the shipping industry, transporting nearly 200 million tons of freight and commodities annually. Beyond its economic significance, the river is a prime destination for recreation and wildlife observation, particularly in a unique stretch known as Pool 13.
Located between Lock and Dam No. 12 in Bellevue, Iowa, and Lock and Dam No. 13 in Fulton, Illinois, Pool 13 boasts a rich array of biodiversity. It offers an escape from daily life, where visitors can enjoy the serene sights and sounds of nature along a 33-nautical-mile stretch. The area is characterized by sloughs, islands, and backwater lakes, making it a hotspot for activities such as fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing.
The transformation of this region began in the mid-1930s with the construction of the lock and dam system. This initiative reshaped the river’s landscape, creating swampland, lakes, and islands. As a result, local wildlife adapted to the new environment, allowing a fascinating coexistence of humans and nature.
Recreational Opportunities in Pool 13
Tourists flock to Pool 13 to explore its various recreational areas, parks, and boat access points. Notable locations include the small town of Sabula, known for its outdoor tourism. The Dale Gardner Veteran’s Memorial Bridge connects Sabula to Savanna, Illinois, offering scenic views of the river. Visitors can dock at Island City Harbor, where amenities include a gift shop and bait store. The North Sabula Access boat launch provides access to several small lakes, including Barge, Dead, and Joe Day lakes.
Just south of Savanna lies Spring Lake, which offers a boat access point and opportunities for fishing. Marquette Park in Savanna, named after explorer Jacques Marquette, features a boat launch and picnic areas, while the nearby Mississippi Palisades State Park provides extensive hiking options along its marked trails and stunning vistas of the river.
For wildlife enthusiasts, the Lost Mound National Wildlife Refuge north of Savanna has become a sanctuary for various species, including grassland birds, thanks to conservation efforts by organizations such as the Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge.
Natural Attractions and Educational Experiences
The Green Island State Wildlife Management Area, located between Sabula and Bellevue, spans 4,000 acres and features a network of lakes and sloughs, although it does not provide direct river access. With three boat launches available, visitors can explore Blake’s Lake and Fish Lake, which are rich in wildlife activity.
In Bellevue, the Bellevue State Park offers panoramic views of the Mississippi and the surrounding landscape. The park is home to various hiking trails and a butterfly sanctuary, enhancing the outdoor experience. Nearby, Lock and Dam No. 12 allows visitors to observe the dam operations and the river traffic, with around 12,000 barges passing through annually.
Educational opportunities abound at the Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center in Thomson. This facility, part of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, features interactive exhibits and educational materials about the river’s ecology. It serves as a hub for community engagement, offering monthly bird walks and nature tours.
As visitors explore Pool 13, they are treated to a living lesson in the importance of the Mississippi River and its surrounding ecosystem. With its unique blend of recreational activities, wildlife observation, and educational resources, Pool 13 stands out as a remarkable destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
