The Cranbrook RCMP has officially launched a new initiative aimed at reducing bike theft in the community through the introduction of the Project 529 Garage program. This initiative, which has proven effective in various locations, allows local cyclists to register their bikes, making it easier to recover them if stolen.

Bike theft has emerged as a significant concern among residents in Cranbrook, with many expressing frustration over the frequency of these incidents. In response, the Cranbrook RCMP’s Community Policing team has partnered with Project 529, bringing a robust tool to local cyclists that increases the chances of bike recovery through registration.

Understanding Project 529 Garage

The 529 Garage app enables cyclists to register their bikes by entering important information such as make, model, serial number, and photos. Once registered, cyclists can visit the Cranbrook RCMP detachment or attend registration events to receive a 529 Shield—a tamper-resistant decal that serves as both a theft deterrent and a direct link to the bike’s registration details. In the unfortunate event that a bike is stolen, users can quickly alert the police, bike shops, and the wider cycling community, significantly enhancing the likelihood of recovery.

This program benefits multiple stakeholders. For cyclists, having a registered bike increases the chances of its return and discourages thieves who recognize the bike’s protection. For law enforcement, the app provides a streamlined way to identify and return recovered bikes to their owners, reducing the number of unclaimed bicycles in storage. Additionally, the initiative fosters collaboration between residents and police, creating a united front against bike theft.

Community Engagement and Support

To support this initiative, the Cranbrook RCMP Community Policing team has acquired 529 Shields, which will be distributed free of charge to local cyclists. Registration events will be organized in the coming weeks, encouraging community members to bring their bikes for assistance with the registration process. Cyclists can also visit the Cranbrook RCMP Detachment located at 31-11th Ave S during regular hours, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00, to register their bikes with the help of Community Policing staff.

“This is about working together,” stated S/Sgt. Barry Graham, Detachment Commander. “When police and the community join forces, we make it harder for thieves and safer for everyone. The launch of 529 Garage here is a big step forward in collaborating to protect what matters to people.”

The Cranbrook RCMP has expressed gratitude to the Province of B.C. for its collaboration with Project 529, which has enabled the funding of memberships for policing agencies across the province.

About Project 529

Founded in 2013, Project 529 has grown to become the world’s largest community-powered bike recovery service, with millions of bikes registered globally. The program has not only helped deter theft but has also reunited countless riders with their bicycles.

Cyclists in Cranbrook are encouraged to download the free 529 Garage app, register their bikes, and take advantage of the upcoming registration events to receive their free shield. Together, the community can work to significantly reduce bike theft and promote a safer environment for cyclists.
