Cambridge Council Meetings Remain Virtual Amid Security Concerns

The City of Cambridge is continuing its policy of restricting public attendance at council meetings, as heightened security measures remain in effect. For another week, community members will only have the option to participate virtually in the council meetings scheduled for October 7 and October 8, 2023. While councillors and staff will gather in person, the decision reflects ongoing concerns regarding safety in the wake of a recent incident.
According to a statement from a City Hall media representative, “The City’s meetings on Tuesday, October 7, and Wednesday, October 8, will be held virtually for the public. Council and staff will attend in person. Heightened security measures remain in place to ensure a safe and respectful environment for Council, staff, and community members.” These meetings include a statutory public meeting and a Committee of Adjustment meeting.
The move to restrict public attendance follows a previous shift to an online format for the council meeting held on September 23, which was also influenced by security concerns. This decision came shortly after city officials contacted the Waterloo Regional Police regarding a threatening voicemail received from a community member. As a result, police located the individual and issued a trespass notice prohibiting them from entering all City of Cambridge properties. Authorities confirmed that there were no grounds for criminal charges or arrests in relation to this incident.
The initial implementation of stricter security measures included a new bag check policy for attendees, which was set to begin on September 23. The council’s decision to limit in-person attendance emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the safety of both council members and the public.
Residents can still engage with the council through virtual connections, maintaining a degree of transparency and participation in local governance despite the limitations on physical attendance. As the situation evolves, city officials continue to assess security protocols to provide a safe environment for all involved.
