Sandbar Launches Stream Ring: A New Way to Capture Ideas
The tech landscape is set for a shift with the introduction of the Stream Ring, a revolutionary smart device designed to capture thoughts effortlessly. Announced on November 5, 2025, by the New York City-based company Sandbar, this voice-activated ring allows users to record their ideas with a simple touch, eliminating the need to pull out a phone or speak into earbuds.
Founded by former Meta employees Mina Fahmi and Kirak Hong, Sandbar aims to redefine interaction with technology. Their previous experience at CTRL-Labs, a neural interface startup acquired by Meta, informs their design philosophy, which they describe as creating “a mouse for voice.” The launch of the Stream Ring has already attracted considerable financial interest, raising $13 million from investors including True Ventures and Upfront Ventures.
Privacy-Centric Design Features
One of the standout features of the Stream Ring is its commitment to user privacy. The device’s microphone activates solely when the user presses the touchpad, ensuring it is not passively listening. This addresses a common concern surrounding always-on voice assistants. Users receive haptic feedback to confirm that recording has begun, providing reassurance that their thoughts are being captured.
The ring can function independently of a mobile connection, allowing users to record voice notes in various environments, from quiet offices to bustling streets. Once paired with the iOS app, it offers real-time AI transcription, converting recordings into searchable text. This feature is particularly beneficial for those moments when inspiration strikes and a phone is not readily available.
Beyond basic functionality, the Stream Ring also introduces “Inner Voice AI,” which personalizes the transcription process by mimicking the user’s own voice and rhythm. This innovative approach transforms the experience into a more natural dialogue, allowing users to feel as if they are thinking aloud rather than interacting with a machine.
Dual Functionality: Voice and Music Control
In addition to its voice recording capabilities, the Stream Ring serves as a music controller. A single tap plays or pauses audio, a double tap skips to the next track, and a swipe adjusts the volume. These features are compatible with popular platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, providing seamless integration with users’ existing audio experiences.
The inclusion of music controls enhances the device’s practicality. Even if Sandbar’s AI services were to discontinue, the Stream Ring would remain functional as a media controller, safeguarding its value for consumers.
Manufactured with an aluminum exterior available in silver or gold, combined with a black resin interior and a glass touchpad, the Stream Ring is designed for everyday use. It comes in sizes ranging from 5 to 13, with a free sizing kit provided for preorders to ensure a proper fit. Rated as splash-proof, the ring is suitable for light exposure to water but is not designed for swimming. Battery life promises all-day use, with charging via USB-C.
Distinctly, the Stream Ring does not include health tracking features, setting it apart from fitness-oriented devices like the Oura Ring. Sandbar’s focus is on enhancing productivity and facilitating voice interaction rather than wellness monitoring.
Pricing for the Stream Ring is competitive, with the silver version priced at $249 and the gold version at $299. Preorders are available now, with shipping anticipated in Summer 2026. Sandbar also offers a subscription service, Stream Pro, for $10 per month, providing unlimited notes and early access to features. Customers who preorder will receive three months of this service free.
The Stream Ring positions itself strategically within the growing market of AI-powered devices. By prioritizing productivity over health tracking, it aims to attract users seeking a discreet and effective method to capture thoughts.
Potential limitations of the device include its current support for only iOS with no confirmed timeline for Android compatibility, which may hinder its appeal to a broader audience. Additionally, while the company claims the battery supports all-day use, real-world performance will only be validated once the device is in consumers’ hands.
Future Prospects
The Stream Ring addresses a growing demand for technology that is intuitive and unobtrusive. “I wanted to capture my thoughts while walking without pulling out my phone,” said Mina Fahmi during the announcement. This desire reflects a broader trend toward making technology seamlessly integrate into daily life.
As the market evolves, the success of the Stream Ring will hinge on its ability to resonate with consumers. With preorders currently available, the anticipation builds for an innovative device that could redefine how individuals record and organize their thoughts.
