The City of Lethbridge is set to initiate a Curbside Battery Collection Program from November 18 to November 28, 2025. This program, developed in partnership with Call2Recycle Canada, aims to provide residents with an accessible and environmentally friendly method for disposing of household batteries.

The pilot program will allow residents to have their batteries collected on the same day as their scheduled curbside organics cart pickup. To participate, residents must utilize the designated battery collection bag or an alternative resealable plastic bag for their used batteries. This initiative is designed to make the recycling process straightforward and efficient.

Accepted batteries include most household and single-use types such as AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and coin/button cells. Additionally, batteries weighing less than five kilograms are eligible for collection. However, certain types, including rechargeable batteries, NiCad, NiMH, Lithium-Ion, car batteries, battery packs, and industrial batteries will not be accepted.

Once collected, the batteries will be transported to certified recycling facilities for proper sorting and processing. It is important for residents to note that, as this is a pilot program, city crews will not return for late or missed collections. For those unable to participate in the curbside program, batteries can also be dropped off at the Waste and Recycling Centre or other designated drop-off locations.

To ensure residents are informed, those using the free Lethbridge Loop app will receive reminders on their designated collection days. For further details about the Curbside Battery Collection Program, residents can visit lethbridge.ca/BatteryCollection. This initiative is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable waste management practices within the community.
