Innovative Iris Pod Offers Tranquility in the Workplace
The Iris Pod is transforming the way employees experience wellness in the workplace. Designed by OpenSeed in collaboration with renowned designer Yves Béhar and his team at Fuseproject, this meditation capsule offers a personal sanctuary for individuals seeking a moment of calm amidst the chaos of modern office life.
The concept was born from the personal journey of Jonathan Marcoschamer, founder of OpenSeed. After attending a 10-day silent meditation course in 2018, he sought a way to integrate mindfulness into his daily work routine. Faced with the challenges of an open-plan office, where privacy is scarce, he envisioned a solution that could foster tranquility in busy environments.
Design Features and Functionality
The Iris Pod is crafted to resemble a womb-like cocoon, constructed from sustainably sourced wood and soft felt panels. This design choice aims to provide both comfort and serenity, creating an environment that calms the nervous system. Inside the pod, users are enveloped in a multisensory experience that combines guided meditation, synchronized lighting, aromatherapy, and immersive sound.
Through a user-friendly touchscreen interface, individuals can select from a range of experiences including breathwork, visualization exercises, and soothing soundscapes. The pod’s lighting sequences are designed to complement the audio, enveloping users in therapeutic colors that promote relaxation in under ten minutes.
Béhar’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the pod’s construction. It features 100% felt panels that not only offer excellent sound insulation but also allow for natural air flow. The use of recycled materials, such as sawdust, and minimal plastic in the textiles underscores the pod’s eco-conscious approach.
Growing Demand and Applications
The Iris Pod is not only a striking addition to office spaces but also addresses a significant need for mental health resources in various sectors. Priced at $22,500 plus installation, it may seem like a considerable investment, yet its impact is evident. At organizations such as Deloitte and Morgan Stanley, these pods are reportedly utilized up to 16 times daily, providing numerous opportunities for employees to reset and recharge.
The appeal of the Iris Pod is expanding beyond traditional workplaces. Cancer treatment centers are now offering the pods to patients and staff, while hospitals are using them to provide healthcare workers with a restorative space during breaks. Even correctional facilities are integrating the pods for officers managing high-stress situations.
This trend highlights a growing recognition of the importance of accessible meditation spaces across different industries. The Iris Pod signifies a shift towards prioritizing mental health and well-being, emphasizing that taking breaks is essential rather than a sign of laziness.
As the workplace continues to evolve, the Iris Pod represents an innovative solution to the pressing need for mindfulness amidst demanding schedules. In a world that often pushes for more productivity, having a dedicated space to relax and regain focus is increasingly vital. The Iris Pod is not merely a wellness amenity; it is a reminder that mental health matters and that design can significantly enhance our daily experiences.
