Google has introduced a notable firmware update for its Nest Mini and Nest Audio smart speakers, enhancing the way these devices display colors and animations through their lights. The new update allows the speakers to showcase a vibrant array of colors, cycling through shades like blue, red, yellow, and green when users activate the device by saying “Hey Google.” This change not only adds a visual upgrade to the speakers but also aligns with Google’s broader strategy to integrate its Gemini AI into various smart home devices.

New Firmware Update for Enhanced User Experience

The update, identified as firmware version 3.77.500695, is currently available for users participating in the Preview Program. Upon activation, the speakers transition from the traditional white light to a colorful display, particularly noticeable on the Chalk and Charcoal models. This shift is more than a mere aesthetic enhancement; it signifies Google’s intent to unify the visual elements of its smart home ecosystem with the newly launched Gemini AI platform.

To access the update, users need to navigate to the Google Home app on their mobile devices. By entering the device settings for their Nest speaker and enrolling in the Preview Program, users can check for the latest firmware version. Once the update is installed, users can enjoy the new color animations, which replace the standard white light response.

Commitment to Smart Home Integration

Google has emphasized that the Gemini for Home initiative will eventually extend to every speaker, smart display, camera, and doorbell released by the company over the past decade. While not all devices may receive the same level of functionality, this commitment reflects Google’s dedication to ensuring that even older hardware benefits from the advancements in its AI technology.

The rollout of Gemini for Home will take place in stages, beginning with an early access program for users in the United States on October 28, 2025. Following this initial launch, Google plans to expand the program to additional countries in early 2026. This phased approach highlights the company’s strategy to gradually enhance its smart home ecosystem while accommodating a broad range of existing devices.

As Google continues to innovate within its smart home offerings, the introduction of colorful light displays on Nest speakers marks a significant step in enhancing user interaction and experience. The integration of Gemini AI into these devices is poised to transform how users engage with their smart home environments.
