Canadiens Pursue David Kampf, But He Signs with Canucks
The Montreal Canadiens expressed interest in acquiring center David Kampf, but he has opted to sign a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks. The 30-year-old Czech player had recently parted ways with the Toronto Maple Leafs, prompting speculation about his next move in the National Hockey League (NHL).
According to sports journalist Elliotte Friedman, the Canadiens made a formal offer to Kampf’s representatives. This development arose following an injury to Alex Newhook, which heightened the Canadiens’ need for a left-handed center with depth. Friedman discussed this during his “Staturday Headlines” segment on November 16, 2025, highlighting that the Canadiens were actively seeking a short-term replacement for Newhook.
Kampf’s left-handed shooting ability was a strategic consideration for the Canadiens, despite his career statistics indicating he is primarily a bottom-six player. Last season, he achieved a personal best of 27 points, demonstrating his capacity to contribute defensively and in face-off situations. Although he may not be regarded as a standout player, his reliability could have provided the Canadiens with much-needed support.
Ultimately, Kampf chose the Canucks, where he is expected to assume a more significant role within the team. This decision leaves the Canadiens in search of alternative solutions to fill the gap left by Newhook’s absence. The Canadiens have been struggling to maintain momentum this season, and the pressure is now on general manager Kent Hughes to address the team’s shortcomings swiftly.
As the team navigates this setback, fans and analysts alike are keenly watching for Hughes’ next moves. The Canadiens will need to act decisively to bolster their roster and regain confidence after a string of disappointing performances. The urgency to improve has become a focal point, as the Canadiens aim to turn their season around and remain competitive in the league.
