Saskatchewan Science Centre Promotes Train Safety Awareness

The Saskatchewan Science Centre is actively promoting railway safety through educational initiatives, highlighted by a recent screening of the documentary *Train Time*. On the morning of March 14, 2024, the Kramer IMAX theatre hosted dozens of attendees eager to learn about train operations and safety protocols.
Ryan Holota, the chief operating officer for the Saskatchewan Science Centre, emphasized the advancements in modern train technology. He noted that many people do not realize that trains are among the most fuel-efficient modes of transporting goods across North America. “They don’t realize that satellite tracking, GPS tracking, adaptive suspensions, and traction control are just some of the unbelievable technological advancements in modern trains,” Holota explained.
Connecting Railways to Everyday Life
The special screenings of *Train Time*, which have been running throughout the week, provide insights into the daily operations of freight train crews and their essential role in North America’s economy. Hank Neumiller, a sergeant with the CN Police Service in Melville, highlighted the significance of trains in everyday life. “Everything in a person’s house was on a train at some point, so making that connection between the railway and daily life is huge,” he said.
This initiative aligns with Rail Safety Week in Canada, which serves as a reminder of the importance of safety around trains. Constable Brad Bidulkm of Canadian Pacific Kansas Limited underscored the necessity of education in promoting railway safety. “Enforcement is another aspect, but education is the most important aspect for railway safety,” he stated. “We’re reaching out to every demographic, whether you’re walking, riding a bike, or driving a vehicle.”
Understanding the Risks and Staying Safe
Statistics from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reveal a concerning trend: there were 896 railway-related accidents in the previous year, resulting in 69 fatalities. These figures underscore the urgent need for increased awareness and precaution.
Operation Lifesaver, a Canadian railway safety initiative, provides essential safety tips, such as maintaining a safe distance from railway tracks, paying attention to signage, and ensuring that trains are not approaching before crossing tracks. In the event of an incident, individuals are urged to contact the CN emergency line at 1-800-465-9239.
The efforts by the Saskatchewan Science Centre and its partners aim not only to educate the public but also to foster a culture of safety and responsibility around railways. By enhancing awareness about trains and their operations, they hope to reduce accidents and improve safety for everyone in proximity to railway lines.
