Collins Dictionary Names “Vibe Coding” Word of the Year for 2025
“Vibe coding,” a groundbreaking term in software development, has been named the Collins Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2025. This innovative concept refers to the use of artificial intelligence to convert natural language into computer code, streamlining the coding process for developers. The selection reflects a significant shift in technology and language, with the term gaining popularity since its introduction in February.
The lexicographers at Collins Dictionary analyze a vast array of sources, including a 24 billion-word corpus, to identify emerging words that capture the evolving nature of language. The surge in the usage of “vibe coding” was a key factor in its selection, highlighting the growing influence of AI in programming. The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy, former director of AI at Tesla and a founding engineer at OpenAI. He described it as a method enabling individuals to create applications while “forgetting that the code even exists.”
Additional Notable Words of 2025
In addition to “vibe coding,” Collins has recognized several other terms that have gained traction this year. “Biohacking” refers to the practice of modifying one’s body to enhance health and longevity. Another notable entry is “clanker,” a derogatory term for computers and AI systems, popularized by the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This term went viral on social media, often used to express frustration with AI chatbots.
The word “glaze” has also made the list, describing excessive or undeserved praise. Meanwhile, “aura farming” has emerged as a popular term among gamers, referring to the intentional cultivation of a charismatic persona. This term gained prominence following the viral “boat kid” video, which inspired a dance trend embraced by celebrities, including American football player Travis Kelce.
Other entries include “broligarchy,” a term describing the influential tech figures known as “tech bros,” and “Henry,” an acronym for “high earner, not rich yet.” The list also features “coolcation,” referring to holidays in cooler climates, and “taskmasking,” which describes the act of creating a false impression of productivity at work. “Micro-retirement,” defined as taking breaks between jobs to pursue personal interests, rounded out this year’s selections.
Reflection on Language and Technology
Alex Beecroft, the managing director of Collins, commented on the significance of this year’s word choice. He stated, “The selection of vibe coding as Collins’ word of the year perfectly captures how language is evolving alongside technology. It signals a major shift in software development, where AI is making coding more accessible.” Beecroft emphasized that the integration of human creativity with machine intelligence is fundamentally altering how we interact with computers.
As technology continues to advance, the language we use to describe it also evolves. The recognition of “vibe coding” as a key term for 2025 demonstrates the increasing accessibility of coding through innovative AI solutions. This shift not only impacts software development but also reflects broader changes in communication and creativity in the digital age.
