Biometrics Institute Survey Highlights Growing Need for Ethical Education

The 2025 Industry Survey from the Biometrics Institute has revealed significant trends in the biometrics sector, emphasizing the increasing need for responsible and ethical use of the technology. Conducted in July, the survey gathered insights from over 200 professionals across the globe, highlighting a notable rise in biometrics adoption by police and law enforcement agencies.
According to the survey, the most anticipated areas for future development include digital identity and artificial intelligence (AI). Respondents also indicated a forthcoming shift in national identity programs, which could have profound implications for the market. A prevalent theme throughout the findings is the urgent need to enhance trust in biometric systems.
Emerging Challenges and Educational Needs
These insights follow the release of the Concepts and Solutions Report by the Biometrics Institute, which delves into emerging technologies and their societal impacts from the perspective of biometrics providers. The report evaluates 30 real-world use cases, offering practical strategies to meet the growing demand for transparency and accountability in biometric applications.
The Biometrics Institute’s commitment to promoting responsible biometrics is evident in various initiatives, including its updated Privacy Guidelines. These guidelines aim to help organizations navigate challenges such as deepfakes and other privacy issues highlighted in the recent report.
Education emerged as a critical theme in the survey, with 84 percent of respondents asserting that public acceptance of biometrics requires outreach beyond the current community of professionals. In response, the Institute has introduced the Fundamentals of Biometrics, an online course designed for individuals outside the professional biometrics circle.
Addressing Threats and Future Directions
The survey also identified deepfakes as a significant threat to the future of biometrics, with 85 percent of respondents expressing concern. This perception is driving interest in multimodal biometrics, which integrates multiple biometric modalities and is expected to see greater growth than any single approach in the coming years.
The Biometrics Institute continues to advocate for responsible practices in the industry through a series of events aimed at keeping professionals informed about the latest developments. The combination of these educational initiatives and insights from the survey underscores the importance of adapting to the rapidly evolving landscape of biometric technology. As organizations navigate these challenges, the emphasis on ethical practices and public education will be crucial in shaping the future of the biometrics sector.
