On the opening night of its new season, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) celebrated the life and contributions of the late Maestro Robert Franz. Franz, who led the WSO for over a decade, passed away on September 2, 2023, after a second battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The evening featured a performance of Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite, a piece that was one of Franz’s favorites, as the orchestra paid tribute to their former music director.

The event took place at the historic Capitol Theatre, where images of Franz were displayed on stage. Members of the WSO reflected on his profound impact on music education and community outreach. “Robert had a passion for music education and outreach, leaving a legacy for generations of music lovers to come,” said Kyle Kootstra, a member of the WSO Board of Directors. In a symbolic gesture, a red bow was tied around packages of sheet music at each stand, honoring Franz’s favorite color. Additionally, crew members wore red in remembrance, showcasing their collective respect for the maestro.

Although Franz was not present physically, his influence was felt throughout the evening. He had meticulously planned the current season and even assisted in selecting guest conductors while managing his illness. “Robert and I were very, very close friends and colleagues,” remarked Carl Topilow, the guest conductor for the evening. “We feel his spirit here, and it’s important for us to continue the fantastic tradition and legacy that he started.”

Topilow, who shared a long friendship with Franz, recalled their time together at the National Repertory Orchestra. He recounted a memorable experience when Franz stepped in for him during a crucial week. “I always felt complete confidence that he would do a great job,” Topilow said, highlighting the trust and camaraderie they shared.

The opening night attracted more than 500 attendees, marking a strong start to the season. The WSO will continue its festivities with another performance on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., which will also honor Franz’s legacy. The orchestra’s commitment to celebrating the memory of their beloved maestro promises to resonate throughout the season, ensuring that his musical guidance remains a vital part of their journey.
