A special event aimed at supporting young cancer patients will take place at Lizzy Lee & Me Salon in Victoria on November 14, 2023. The Cut-A-Thon will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., focusing on raising funds and collecting hair donations for the Wigs for Kids BC program. This initiative provides free custom wigs to children suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, helping to enhance their quality of life.

The Cut-A-Thon has its roots in 2010, created by the salon’s original owner, Lisette Scabar, who dedicated the fundraiser to her own personal experience with cancer. Current owner Breanne Epoch shared Scabar’s story, revealing that during her treatment, Scabar lost all her hair. “When she first put on a wig, it made her feel good,” Epoch explained. This inspired Scabar to support an organization that brings comfort to children facing similar challenges.

Every donation received during the event, both financial and in the form of hair, will directly benefit Wigs for Kids BC. Epoch emphasized that the day is not just about haircuts; it also promises a range of engaging activities. Young attendees can enjoy princess and superhero makeovers, professional face painting, and more—available for free with pledges of $50 or higher.

In addition to these activities, children will have opportunities to meet enchanted princesses, spin a wheel of fortune, and indulge in treats at a hot chocolate and donut bar. Epoch, who acquired the business in April, expressed her commitment to continuing Scabar’s legacy. “It would mean a lot if I continued the tradition,” she said, aiming to make this year’s event larger and more impactful.

Epoch anticipates welcoming around 250 guests to the salon for this inaugural Cut-A-Thon under her ownership. While the primary focus is on collecting hair donations, she encourages anyone willing to contribute to join in and support the cause.

At the heart of the event is Scabar’s vision of restoring a sense of pride and dignity to young patients. Epoch reflected on Scabar’s belief that wearing a wig can significantly change one’s perspective. “Everybody wants to feel beautiful and normal, to feel like they fit in,” she noted. “Giving kids the opportunity to have a wig and feel confident in themselves is a beautiful thing.”

To participate in this meaningful event, individuals can book an appointment by calling 250-590-5568 or by visiting the salon’s website at lizzyleeandme.com. Lizzy Lee & Me Salon is located at Hillside Mall, 1644 Hillside Ave., Victoria.
