United Way Brandon & District has initiated its 2025 fall campaign with an ambitious fundraising goal of $800,000, underscored by the theme #BeTheOne. The campaign officially commenced this month and aims to mobilize community support to address pressing local needs.

Co-Chairs Bring Passion and Purpose

Leading the effort are co-chairs Shelly Thompson and Tim Black, both prominent figures in the local media landscape as morning radio hosts at Q Country. Their joint leadership, a departure from the traditional single-chair model, reflects a strategic decision by the organization. Cynamon Mychasiw, United Way’s chief executive officer, expressed enthusiasm about their involvement, emphasizing their deep appreciation for the organization’s mission.

Thompson’s connection to the United Way is both personal and professional. After relocating to Brandon from Toronto in 2018 with her son, who has special needs, she found her footing through a position funded by the United Way. “We really came here with nothing but the clothes on our backs,” she recalled. “That job put food in our fridge and a roof over our heads. It gave us dignity.” Her experience motivates her commitment to this campaign, which she views as an opportunity to give back to an organization that significantly impacted her life.

Building on Past Success

The 2025 campaign follows a record-setting previous year, where former chair Barry Cooper successfully raised over $752,000. Known as “Mr. Brandon,” Cooper’s extensive community involvement set a high standard, leaving behind “huge shoes to fill,” according to Thompson. Despite stepping down, Cooper continues to support United Way’s initiatives.

Thompson and Black aim to leverage the foundation laid by Cooper while infusing their unique perspectives into the campaign. They acknowledge the challenges of reaching the $800,000 target, particularly in the current economic climate marked by rising costs of living. Thompson noted, “Families are facing tough choices—do they pay rent, cover their prescriptions, or put food on the table? That reality is exactly why this campaign matters.”

Black highlighted the significant impact of inflation, stating that grocery costs have increased by more than 25% in recent years. He emphasized the need for community support, urging both individuals and businesses to consider increasing their contributions this year. “Every dollar raised here stays here,” Black assured supporters, reminding them that their donations directly benefit local programs and families.

The campaign will host several beloved events, including Brandon’s Largest Garage Sale, the Spaghetti Dinner, and the 30th anniversary of the Holiday Tree Auction. While no new major events have been confirmed, both co-chairs are optimistic about additional initiatives being explored.

Thompson and Black emphasized that success transcends the monetary goal. For Thompson, fostering community participation is crucial, whether through small donations or volunteer efforts. “If we can inspire people to be the one who steps up in whatever way they can, that’s a victory,” she said.

Black echoed her sentiments, noting his family’s long-standing support for United Way campaigns. “We’ve seen first-hand the positive impact it has,” he stated. Both co-chairs expressed their commitment to the organization beyond the campaign, indicating a desire to remain involved in future initiatives.

As the campaign unfolds, Thompson and Black are focused on rallying community support to ensure that the United Way can continue its vital work, providing assistance to those who need it most in Brandon and beyond.
