In a remarkable initiative to promote autism awareness, Toronto resident Qaiser Saghir Mayo will undertake a 50-kilometre walk from Toronto to Milton on Thanksgiving Day, October 14, 2024. This event aims to raise both awareness and support for Autism Ontario. Mayo’s journey symbolizes a commitment to fostering understanding and compassion for families affected by autism.

Mayo, who works in the security sector, has no personal connection to autism but has dedicated significant time to advocacy. His previous walks include a 33 km trek to Mississauga in 2023 and a 45 km journey to Brampton in 2024, both of which drew increasing community support. This year’s walk marks his most ambitious effort yet, starting at 7:30 AM and concluding in Milton by 5:30 PM.

Community Support and Participation

Mayo’s efforts have been bolstered by a growing community of supporters. Awaiting his arrival in Milton will be Mayor Gordon Krantz along with other dignitaries and local councillors, highlighting the significance of community involvement in raising awareness. “This walk is my way of standing with families affected by autism,” Mayo stated. “I feel the pain of parents who struggle every day. I want them to know they’re not alone.”

The event is open to everyone, inviting participants to join for any duration, whether for just a few minutes or the entire distance. Each participant’s presence sends a strong message of support. Donations to Autism Ontario are encouraged, and spreading awareness is equally important. “Long walk, loud message” encapsulates the spirit of this initiative, serving as a rallying cry for action and solidarity.

Building a National Tradition

Each year, Mayo selects a different city to connect communities across Canada, aiming to create a national tradition of awareness, unity, and support for autism. His vision is to build bridges among diverse communities, fostering understanding and collaboration. As Anne Frank once said, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” This walk is a testament to the power of community and the willingness to extend support.

Those interested in participating or contributing can find more information on the Facebook page “Walk for a Great Cause” or by emailing [email protected]. Donations can also be made directly via the Autism Ontario Donation Page. Each contribution, whether in time, energy, or financial support, reinforces the movement for autism awareness and the ongoing journey toward inclusivity.
