Taylor Swift Fans Raise $2.3 Million for Monterey Bay Aquarium
In a remarkable display of fandom, supporters of Taylor Swift have raised $2.3 million for the Monterey Bay Aquarium through a vintage T-shirt campaign. The initiative was sparked by Swift’s recent mention of the aquarium, prompting her fans, often referred to as “Swifties,” to rally together in support of the institution dedicated to ocean conservation.
The vintage shirt, originally created 32 years ago, was resurrected thanks to a collaborative effort led by Liz MacDonald, who noted that this project involved extensive research and outreach. “We were in the archives, digging through,” MacDonald explained. “We were contacting former aquarium staff members, all trying to find out more. And I think it was really a whole group effort to bring the aquarium and Liberty Graphics together so that we could make this happen.”
The aquarium aimed to express gratitude not only to Swift for her shout-out but also to her fans who flooded the aquarium’s social media channels with encouragement. Donations increased significantly, particularly the $13 contributions, which were a nod to Swift’s fan culture. “That’s like a little thank-you from the Swifties. So we really appreciate that,” MacDonald added.
To participate, fans had the opportunity to donate $65.13, a figure that holds significance as Swift’s lucky number. This allowed supporters to feel connected to the aquarium’s mission while showing appreciation for its beloved sea otters. The campaign launched at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday and achieved its initial goal of $1.3 million in under eight hours.
By the following day, donations had surged to $2.3 million. Fans like Margaux Burnham quickly jumped on the opportunity, purchasing the shirt almost immediately after it became available. “It came out this morning at 9:40. I bought it at 9:50, and I’m so excited for it to come,” Burnham expressed.
All funds raised from this initiative are earmarked for the aquarium’s conservation efforts, particularly benefiting otters named Ivy, Ruby, and Opal, the latter of whom has a name inspired by Swift’s lyrics. “Opal—yeah, you know—her name was voted on by the fans, so we don’t know. Was Taylor one of the ones who voted? I’m not sure who can say, but only she knows,” MacDonald remarked.
Due to the overwhelming response, the aquarium has temporarily paused new orders and backorders. In a social media update, the aquarium stated, “Our small team is working as fast as pawsible to catch up—delivery may take a bit longer than usual due to high demand. We appreciate your patience! Those whose gift is on backorder will be contacted when we have an estimated shipping timeline.”
This fundraising effort highlights not only the power of fandom but also the impact that collective action can have on supporting vital conservation efforts. Taylor Swift’s influence continues to resonate, uniting her fans for a cause that extends beyond music and into meaningful environmental stewardship.
