On October 2, 2023, the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s held its annual Business Appreciation Dinner and Awards at the St. Mary’s District Lions Hall in Sherbrooke. The event recognized outstanding local businesses for their contributions to the community, with Beanie’s Bistro Ltd. taking home awards in three categories.

Following a sit-down dinner prepared by the Lions Club members, the awards ceremony commenced, celebrating both winners and runners-up in various business categories. As Warden James Fuller remarked, the community had a chance to nominate and vote for local businesses to acknowledge their achievements.

Recognizing Excellence in Local Business

Beanie’s Bistro Ltd. was awarded the 2025 Best New Business, Best Community Impact, and Best Customer Service awards. This recognition underscores the bistro’s significant impact and growth within the community. The Best Long-Standing Business award went to Sherbrooke Garage Ltd., which also received runner-up certificates for both Best Customer Service and Best Community Impact.

Other notable mentions included Sherbrooke Village Inn, which was the runner-up for the Best New Business award, and The Soap Company of Nova Scotia, which earned recognition as runner-up for the Best Long-Standing Business award.

The criteria for these awards highlight the contributions of local businesses. The Best New Business award is given to a new establishment or one operating under new ownership within the last five years. This award recognizes those that demonstrate promising growth and a successful business strategy. The Best Community Impact award honors businesses that make a meaningful difference in their communities, while the Best Customer Service award is presented to those committed to exceptional service and customer satisfaction. Lastly, the Long-Standing Business award recognizes establishments that have been operating for over ten consecutive years, showcasing their sustainability and growth.

Community Spirit and Support

During the ceremony, Christopher Fraser from Sherbrooke Garage expressed the hard work involved in running a business, stating, “Some days are crazy. But it’s 100 per cent worth it knowing the community appreciates all of us.” His colleague, Cindy Richard, who has been with the garage for 37 years, added that this year’s awards were particularly meaningful, especially in light of the absence of longtime team member Donnie Fraser due to health issues.

Keren Ruller, the director of economic development for the municipality and the evening’s emcee, highlighted the vital role local businesses play in fostering a vibrant economy and encouraging community investment. She remarked, “St. Mary’s businesses cultivate a vibrant local economy, encourage investment, and help maintain a strong sense of community. These contributions are invaluable.”

The event featured a guest address by Adele MacDonald, chief operating officer at Annapolis Investments in Rural Opportunity, which supports entrepreneurs with business ideas ready for launch or growth. MacDonald spoke about the organization’s history and the services it offers to aspiring business owners.

The District of St. Mary’s annual Business Appreciation Dinner and Awards serves as an important reminder of the diverse range of businesses that contribute to community strength, from farming and forestry to hospitality and manufacturing. As Warden Fuller emphasized, all local businesses, regardless of size, are “the lifeblood of our communities.” The evening concluded with several door prizes, further celebrating the spirit of local entrepreneurship.
